When it comes to mayonnaise stains, the quicker you act, better. The sooner you start treating the stain, less likely it will remain on the fabric. Here are the steps you should take if your beloved sweatshirt is stained with mayonnaise:
Before you do anything else, use a butter knife or something similar to scrape off any excess mayonnaise from the stained area. Pulling the fabric taught as you scrape can help ensure that you remove all the extra mayo so it doesn’t set into fabric fibers.
Mix a bit of liquid detergent with some cold water, then dip a clean cloth into the solution. Gently dab the sweat shirt fabric in the detergent solution, being careful not to rub too hard. Rubbing could damage the fabric and make the stain worse.
Once you’ve pre-treated the stain, rinse the area with cool water and then repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain is gone. Remember, it’s important to use only cold water when treating a mayonnaise stain. Hot water can cause the mayo to set into the fabric, making it much harder to remove.
If the stain persists after rinsing and pre-treating, you can try a special enzyme stain remover. Apply the cleaner directly to stain and follow the directions on the package. Enzyme cleaners are great for breaking down proteins like mayonnaise, so they’re sure to get your sweat shirt stain free.
Once you’ve used an enzyme stain remover, you can follow up with a regular washing. Wash your sweat shirt in warm water with some mild detergent. For best results, check the garment for any remaining stains before putting it in the drying machine. If the stain is still there, repeat steps 2-4 before throwing it in the dryer.
