When you get a mayonnaise stain on your sweater, it's important to act quickly. If left untreated, mayonnaise can set into fabrics and become a permanent fixture. The best way to remove mayonnaise stains is to use a combination of warm water, dish soap, and white vinegar.

Step 1: Blot Up the Excess Mayo

Start by blotting up as much of the mayonnaise as you can with a clean cloth or paper towel. Don't scrub or rub it in; simply blot until no more comes up.

Step 2: Soak in Warm Water

Next, fill a sink or basin with some warm water and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Submerge the stained area of the sweater and let it soak for several minutes.

Step 3: Make a Vinegar Solution

In a separate bowl, mix one part white vinegar to two parts water. Dip the stained area into the solution, gently rubbing the fabric together to loosen the stain. Then rinse the area with cold water to remove the vinegar solution.

Step 4: Wash the Sweater

Throw the sweater in the washing machine with some laundry detergent and a few drops of liquid dish soap. For stubborn stains, you may need to pre-treat with a stain remover or an oxygen-based bleach before putting it in wash.

Step 5: Hang and Dry

Once the sweater is cleansed, hang it on a line or drying rack to air dry. Do not put the sweater in the dryer, as heat will set the stain. After it's completely dry, the mayonnaise stain should be gone.
