Step 1: Soak in Cold Water

The first step in treating a mayonnaise stain on silk shantung is to rinse the area under cold running water. If stain is still fresh, this should be enough to get rid of it. However, if mayonnaise has been on the fabric for some time, you may need to soak it in cold water for up to 15 minutes.

Step 2: Apply Detergent

After soaking the stain in cold water, you can apply detergent directly to the affected area. Most liquid laundry detergents should do trick; just make sure to use a small amount and gently rub it into the fabric. Once the detergent has been rubbed into the fabric, you can leave it to sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

Step 3: Rinse and Repeat

Once detergent has been applied, it's time to rinse fabric. Make sure to use cold water to avoid setting stain. If the stain persists after the initial rinse, you can repeat the process until it's gone. Once the stain has been removed, wash the fabric according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 4: Air Dry

After washing the fabric, lay it out on a flat surface or hang it up to air dry. Never put silk shantung in dryer, as the heat can cause the fabric to shrink and warp. Once the fabric is dry, check to make sure the stain has been completely removed; if not, simply repeat process.
