Gather Supplies

Start by gathering what you need: paper towels, cold water, laundry detergent, a bucket, a soft cloth or sponge, and an enzyme-based pre-wash treatment. All are necessary for effective stain removal.

Tackle Fresh Stains First

For fresh stains, immediately scoop up as much of mayonnaise as possible. Press a paper towel against the area to blot up the liquid. Once you’ve managed to get rid of as much of the mayo as you can, your next step is to dilute and flush the stained area. To do this, mix one tablespoon of laundry detergent with one quart of cold water. Gently apply the mixture with a sponge or cloth to the spot, being careful not to rub harshly into the fabric. After a few minutes, rinse the area with cold water, and then re-apply the detergent-water mixture if needed.

Treat Set-In Stains

If a mayonnaise stain has had time to set, it will be more difficult to remove. To address this, start by applying an enzyme-based pretreated solution to the stain. Allow it to soak in for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Blot away moisture with a paper towel. Apply laundry detergent solution to the stain and let sit for 5 minutes. Rinse again with cold water. Finally, launder the garment, using the cold water setting.
