The first step is to address the stain as soon as possible to prevent it from spreading. Start by blotting material with a clean, white cloth or paper towel. This will help absorb some of the excess liquid, preventing it from becoming more deeply embedded in the fabric. Once you’ve finished blotting, take care not to rub the area, which may further push the stain into the fibers.
Create a cleaning solution by mixing one teaspoon of liquid detergent with one cup of cold water. Apply the mixture directly to the stained area using a soft bristle brush. For best results, apply gently in a circular motion. Allow solution to sit for a few minutes before removing. Rinse the area with cold water. If the stain has not been completely removed, repeat the process.
As mayonnaise is composed primarily of oil, it may leave behind an unpleasant odor. To deodorize the stain area, simply mix 1/4 cup of vinegar in one quart of warm water. Use this solution to sponge the area until the odor is eliminated. Once you have finished, rinse area with cold water and air-dry.
If the stain persists after attempting treatment at home, contact a professional dry cleaning service. Make sure to explain the nature of the stain in detail and always ask before bringing in the item to be cleaned so that the professionals can determine the best course of action.
