If mayonnaise stain is on a fabric such as a cotton shirt or twill pants, begin by scraping away any excess mayonnaise with a dull knife or the edge of a credit card. Do not rub the area as this will only spread the stain further into the fabric.
Next, dampen a cloth with cold water and blot the stain until no more mayonnaise comes away from the fabric. If stain persists, you can use a gentle soap to help lift the mayonnaise out of the fabric. Apply the soap and gently rub it in with your fingers before rinsing the affected area.
If mayonnaise still is not fully removed, you can use a small amount of rubbing alcohol or white vinegar on the stained area. Test on a hidden part of the garment first to make sure it does not affect color.
Leather and suede items require special attention when cleaning. Start by wiping away any remaining mayonnaise with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid saturating the fabric, as this could cause discoloration or damage. Consider using a detergent-free cleaner specifically designed for leather if the mayonnaise doesn’t completely come away.
Once all mayonnaise has been removed, let the item dry completely before attempting to wear it. Make sure you apply a leather conditioner afterwards to stop leather from drying out and cracking.
To keep your clothing free from mayonnaise stains in future, always use a napkin when eating messy foods and use caution when handling items like jars and dressings. To be extra cautious, consider wearing an apron when eating.
