When a mayonnaise stain appears on your formalwear, resist the temptation to treat it as you would a regular clothing stain. Instead, start by blotting the area with a damp, white cloth or paper towel. Do not rub the area as this can make the stain worse, or spread it. Gently press the cloth into the stain and blot up as much of the mayonnaise as you can.
After blotting up as much of the stain as possible, apply liquid laundry detergent directly to the damp stain. Using your fingertip, rub the detergent into the stained area in small circles until the detergent is dispersed evenly across the stain. After the detergent has been applied, let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing the fabric with cold water.
Once you have pretreated the stain, submerge the fabric in a bucket or basin filled with cold water. Let it soak for at least an hour, stirring the fabric every 15 minutes or so to ensure the water penetrates the entire area of the stain. Then, rinse the fabric with cold water to remove detergent and any remaining mayonnaise.
Finally, launder fabric as normal using cold water. Since cold water preserves colors better than hot water, use the lowest temperature setting that is recommended for the fabric. If the stain persists after laundering, repeat steps 1-4 until stain is completely removed.
