Getting Rid of Mayonnaise Stains on Cotton Gingham: A 4-Step Guide

Mayonnaise is an incredibly versatile condiment that can be added to a variety of dishes or snacks. Unfortunately, it can also leave behind sticky stains if spilled onto clothing, such as cotton gingham. The good news is that with a bit of elbow grease and the right ingredients, these stains can be removed.

What You’ll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Borax
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Cold water
  • Soft bristled brush
  • One or two soft towels

Step 1: Blot Stain

Using a clean, damp towel, blot the mayonnaise stain on your cotton gingham. Do not scrub or use hot water as this could actually make the stain worse. Instead, just blot away as much mayonnaise as you can.

Step 2: Apply White Vinegar & Borax

Mix equal parts of white vinegar and borax (1 teaspoon each) in a bowl. Dip a soft bristled brush into the mixture and use it to gently scrub stained area. This will help to loosen stain from the fabric.

Step 3: Apply Dishwashing Liquid

Apply some dishwashing liquid directly to the stained area and gently massage it into the fabric with your fingers or the soft bristled brush. Leave the liquid on the fabric for 10 minutes before proceeding to next step.

Step 4: Rinse with Cold Water

Rinse the dishwashing liquid off by running cold water over the saturated area. Use a soft towel to blot away any excess liquid and repeat, if necessary. You may need to repeat the entire process a few times before the stain is fully gone.
