When you accidentally spill something like mayonnaise onto a piece of cotton fabric, it’s important to act quickly in order to avoid setting the stain. The sooner you start treating the stain, more successful your efforts will be. Here’s how to get that mayonnaise stain off cotton canvas.
It can be tempting to try to scrub away the stain, but it’s important to resist this urge. Rubbing at stain can actually set it deeper into the fabric and increase chances of a persistent stain. Instead, take a clean cloth and blot the stain gently until the majority of surface liquid has been absorbed.
Mix one teaspoon of liquid detergent with two cups of cool water in a bowl. Dip a clean cloth or sponge into soapy solution and gently dab the stain. Work from the outside of the stain towards the center in order to prevent stain from spreading. Continue until the entire stain is covered. Let the fabric sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with cool water.
If the stain remains, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup of cool water. Using a cloth or sponge, dab the stain with the vinegar solution. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Repeat if necessary.
Once the stain is gone, check the fabric for any residual discoloration. If there is still a slight yellowish hue, mix 1/4 cup of lemon juice with 1/4 cup of cool water and dab the affected area. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water.
Lay fabric on an old towel and let it air dry. Avoid using a dryer until the stain is completely gone. If the stain still persists after drying, repeat process.
The best way to deal with mayonnaise stains is to avoid them to begin with. Keep a bottle of spot remover handy in case of spills or smudges. Also, be sure to blot up as much of the mess as possible right away, and pre-treat the fabric with a mild laundry detergent before washing. This will help to prevent the stain from setting.
