The first thing you need to do is take a damp paper towel and blot the stain as much as possible so that the mayonnaise doesn’t spread further. This will help to prevent the stain from becoming larger or more difficult to take care of later.
The next step is to spray the stain with a pre-wash stain remover and let it sit for five minutes before beginning to scrub fabric with a soft cloth or brush. If the stain is particularly stubborn, you can apply some liquid detergent directly to the affected area and leave it for fifteen minutes before continuing to scrub.
Once the stain has been sufficiently removed, rinse the garment in cold water to remove any remaining residue. If possible, soak the garment in cold water with a commercial stain remover for up to two hours before washing normally in the washing machine.
For large or hard-to-remove stains, you can also try making a paste out of equal parts baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and applying it to the affected area. Rub the paste into the stain and leave it to sit overnight. The following day, paste should be easy to remove by rubbing it off with a damp cloth.
Once all the stain has been removed, launder the garment according to the washing instructions on the label, being sure to use the correct temperature setting for the fabric. After washing, allow the item to air dry or tumble dry on low heat.
With a few simple steps, you can easily rid a collared shirt of a mayonnaise stain. Just be sure to act quickly and follow the steps outlined above for best results.
