Mayonnaise is a creamy, delicious condiment that can be used to make many different dishes. Unfortunately, the oily composition of many mayonnaise products can mean that it leaves a stubborn stain when it lands on clothing.

Removing Mayonnaise Stains with Household Products

Many people find success in getting rid of mayonnaise stains using some common household items, such as dish soap, vinegar, and baking soda. The process for removing stains depends on the type and age of the cloth material, so it's important to read the care label before getting started.

If care label allows, first step is to take a damp paper towel or a cloth, then gently dab any excess mayonnaise from the surface of the material. Be careful not to scrub or rub material, as this can cause the stain to spread and penetrate further into the fabric.

Once the surface area is clean, mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with warm water. Dip the cloth or paper towel into the soapy solution and gently dab it onto the stained area. Keep in mind that if you see the stain transferring onto cloth or paper towel, you'll likely need to change it for a fresh cloth each time.

After applying a few drops of soap, try pouring a small amount of white vinegar onto the stain and allowing it to sit. Once this has worked its way into the surface, use a slightly damp cloth to dab the area and remove the vinegar. Finally, use a mixture of baking soda and water and apply it to the area. Let the material sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

Depending on the severity of the stain or fabric that is being cleaned, the mayonnaise stain may require multiple treatments. If stain persists, you may need to consider using a commercial stain remover to effectively get the area clean.
