How to Easily Remove Tough Mayonnaise Stains From Area Rugs

Mayonnaise is a popular condiment used on sandwiches, burgers and salads, but it’s not always so popular when it ends up as a stain on an area rug. Mayonnaise can be a tricky substance to remove from fabric or carpet fibers, but with a few household items and some patience you’ll have your rug looking like new in no time.

Materials You'll Need

  • Club soda or white vinegar
  • Absorbent paper towels
  • Liquid dish soap

Step 1: Blot the Stain

The most important step in removing any kind of stain is to act quickly and blot the stain, not rub it, with absorbent paper towels. Make sure to use gentle pressure when blotting the stain; applying too much pressure can push the mayonnaise further into the fibers and irritate the stain further.

Step 2: Wet Stain With Club Soda or White Vinegar

Once the stain has been blotted, wet the stain with either club soda or white vinegar. The carbonation in the club soda will help to break up the oil in the mayo, while the acidity of the vinegar will also help to loosen and lift the stain away from the fibers.

Step 3: Apply Liquid Dish Soap

Once the stain has been wet with either club soda or white vinegar, apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to stain. Use a soft-bristled brush to work the soap into stain. This will help to further break up and lift the stain from the fibers.

Step 4: Rinse Soap

Once the soap has been worked into the stain, rinse area with cool water. Continue to blot the area with absorbent paper towels until stain has been completely removed. If the stain remains, repeat steps two through four until the stain is gone.
