Fresh mayonnaise stains are much easier to remove than set-in stains. As soon as you notice stain, pre-treat it with a stain remover product or a mild detergent. Gently massage the spot with your fingers to work the product into fabric. Allow the pre-treatment to sit for several minutes, then rinse. If the stain persists, launder the garment according to care instructions.
Set-in mayonnaise stains can be a bit more challenging to remove. Start by rubbing a drop or two of liquid laundry detergent into the stained area. Allow the detergent to sit for several minutes before rinsing with cool water. If the stain remains, try soaking the garment in a mixture of 1 quart of warm water and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and then launder according to care instructions.
If the stain just won’t come out no matter what you do, it’s time to try vinegar. Fill a sink with 1 quart of warm water and add 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Soak garment in solution for no more than 30 minutes. Then rinse with cool water and launder as usual. The vinegar helps break up the proteins in the mayonnaise, allowing for a more effective cleaning.
To minimize the chances of having to deal with mayonnaise stains in the future, try to remember following tip: blot up spills as soon as possible. It will make pre-treating the stain much easier. Plus, pre-treating a stain can help prevent it from setting in, saving you time and hassle.
