The first step you need to take before removing mascara stains is to turn item inside out and rinse it off with cold water to prevent the stain from setting in. Once the stained area is rinsed off, apply a liberal amount of a mild detergent directly onto stain. Work the detergent into the fabric gently with your fingers or a soft brush.
Then, let the detergent sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing the garment off with cold water again. You should then wash the garment in the washing machine as usual and hang it up to air dry. If stain is still visible, repeat the process until it's completely gone.
If you're not comfortable using detergents, you can also try using natural cleaners like baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar. Of these, baking soda is probably most effective, and it's easy to make a paste out of it. Just mix some baking soda with water and apply it directly onto the stain and let it sit for about 10 minutes before wiping it away with a damp cloth.
Lemon juice and vinegar are also great natural cleaners. Simply pour a few drops of either directly onto the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water and cleaning it in the washing machine as usual. These natural cleaners may require a few applications before the stain is fully gone.
