Start by checking the care label on garment for any instructions on how to clean it. Some fabrics require special cleaning methods, and if the instructions on the care label call for “dry clean only” or “professional cleaning” then you should take garment to a dry cleaner. If the label says that the material can be cleaned at home, proceed to the next step.
Once you're sure that the fabric can be washed at home, pre-treat the stain to prevent it from setting in. Pre-treating the stain will make it easier to remove when you wash the garment. Start by sponging the stain with cold water and then apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or a pre-wash spot treatment directly onto the stain. Allow the detergent to remain on the fabric for 15 minutes before proceeding.
Wash the garment in cold water as instructed on the care label. Some fabrics may require delicate or hand wash cycle while others can be placed in the washing machine. Do not use hot water as it may cause the stain to set in.
Once garment has been washed, allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight. Do not put your garment in the dryer until you're sure the stain is gone. If the stain persists, repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain is completely removed.
If the stain persists after following steps 1 to 4, take your garment to a professional dry cleaner. Professional dry cleaners have specialized cleaning solvents and techniques to remove tough stains from fabrics.
