Mascara stains are notoriously difficult to remove from clothing, but it is possible with a bit of care and attention. The best way to start is by pre-treating the stain with a laundry detergent, which will help to break down the oils and proteins that makeup mascara.

Mix a few drops of detergent with a cup of warm water and gently dab the mixture onto the affected area. Allow the detergent to sit for at least five minutes before proceeding. After the waiting period, rinse away any remaining detergent with warm water and gently pat dry with a soft cloth.

If the stain remains, mix a solution of one tablespoon of ammonia and one cup of warm water and test it on a small hidden area of the sweater to make sure it won't discolor or damage the material. If it's safe, lightly dab the ammonia solution on the stained area and let it sit for two minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Once the stain is removed, launder the sweater according to the instructions on the tag. It’s always safest to wash sweaters on delicate or hand wash cycle in cold water. For an extra layer of protection, place your sweater in a mesh laundry bag before putting it in the washing machine.

With a bit of patience and these simple steps, you can easily get your favorite sweater looking like new again!
