Before you begin to clean a mascara stain, it's important to take right initial steps to prevent further staining and damage. Using a white cloth or paper towel, start to delicately blot up the mascara stain. Avoid rubbing fabric- doing so could spread the stain and cause further damage.
After blotting out the excess mascara, it's time to pretreat the stain. Make a solution of warm water and a few drops of laundry detergent and, using a damp cloth, dab the pretreatment on the stain. Leave the detergent on the affected area for 10-15 minutes.
Once your sweater is pretreated, it's time to launder it. Before you add your sweater to the machine, check the label for washing instructions. Use the warmest temperature recommended, and add a bit of extra detergent to the cycle. Once cycle is completed, check the sweater for any remaining stains. If they are still visible, go back to step 2 and repeat the process.
If you've gone through steps 1-3 and the stain remains, try rinsing the sweater with white vinegar. The acidity in the vinegar can help to remove any lingering mascara. Mix equal parts of water and vinegar together in a bucket or sink. Submerge the sweater in the solution and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. When you're finished, rinse the sweater with cold water for a final clean.
Once the sweater has been pretreated and laundered, it's time to air dry it. Lay the sweater flat on a clean, dry towel. If possible, try to avoid direct sunlight as this could fade the sweater's color. Allow the sweater to dry naturally.
