Accidental mascara spills can happen at any time, leaving your favorite silk satin fabric looking a little worse for wear. This delicate fabric presents an extra challenge when it comes to cleaning and removing stains, but the right method and techniques will make the job much easier. Here are five simple and effective tips for getting rid of mascara stains from silk satin.

1. Blot gently with a damp cloth

When you notice the first signs of a mascara stain, act quickly and use a soft, damp cloth to blot the area immediately. Do not scrub as this could spread stain and damage the delicate fabric. Be patient and persist with blotting technique until most of the mascara has been removed.

2. Pretreat with a stain remover

After successfully blotting away most of the stain, it’s time to bring out the big guns and pretreat the area with a good-quality stain remover or laundry detergent. Make sure to read label and choose one that’s safe for use on silk satin. Apply a generous amount directly to the stain and leave it for around 10 minutes to allow cleaner to work its magic.

3. Wash gently in warm water

Once the stain remover or detergent has been applied, it’s time to wash the fabric. Use a mild and gentle detergent to clean area in warm water. Do not rub the fabric together or use too much pressure during the washing process, otherwise, you risk damaging the fabric.

4. Air dry or tumble dry on low heat

Once the fabric has been washed, opt to air dry or tumble dry on a low, delicate setting. The heat from the dryer can set any remaining mascara residue into the fabric and should be avoided at all costs. To ensure optimal results, take the fabric to a dry cleaner who will have the necessary equipment to properly and safely remove stain.

5. Wash regularly to prevent future stains

To prevent future mascara stains from appearing, try to wash your silk satin fabrics regularly and take them to the dry cleaners from time to time for a deep clean. Taking proper care of your silk satin fabrics will help them last longer and reduce the chance of any nasty stains ruining your favourite garments.
