When it comes to beauty products, mascara probably tops the list of items that can leave behind stubborn stains. Whether you have a wand-wielding toddler in the house or just an accident-prone makeup wearer, getting mascara off clothes can be a daunting task if you don’t know what you’re doing. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips and tricks you can use to get mascara off shorts quickly and easily.

Method 1: Soap and Water

One of the oldest and most effective methods of washing a stain is to use soap and water, and it’s just as effective with mascara. Start by wetting the area of the stain with cold water. Take a mild soap, such as dishwashing soap or baby shampoo, (but not laundry detergent) and work it into a lather. If necessary, use a soft-bristle brush to get the suds deep into the fabric. Rinse the area with warm water, and repeat as needed until the stain is gone.

Method 2: Rubbing Alcohol

If stain persists, rubbing alcohol can be a great option. First, test the fabric to make sure the alcohol won’t cause any further damage. Dab some rubbing alcohol onto an inner seam or hidden spot. If no discoloration or damage occurs, you can proceed with the stain removal. Soak a cotton ball with the rubbing alcohol, and dab at the stain. Be gentle to avoid spreading the stain, and continue dabbing until the stain is gone. Once you’re done, rinse the area with cold water to remove alcohol.

Method 3: White Vinegar

White vinegar is a natural stain remover, and it’s excellent at getting rid of mascara. Start by diluting one part white vinegar with two parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the stained area and let it soak for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water. You may find that this method requires more than one application, but it should be effective in completely removing mascara stain.

Nobody wants to deal with pesky mascara stains, but with these time-tested methods, you can get them out quickly and efficiently. So don’t despair—your shorts are salvageable!
