The best way to remove a mascara stain depends on the type of material your shoe is made of. If your shoe is made of leather, suede, or a delicate fabric, start by identifying the material so you don't damage it while trying to remove the stain.
Create a pretreat solution by combining warm water with a teaspoon of dish detergent. Take a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently rub it into the stained area. Keep rubbing until the stain starts to become faint.
Using a paper towel or cotton cloth, blot up as much of the pretreat solution and mascara stain as possible. Hold the cloth firmly against the stain for thirty seconds at a time.
Using a damp cloth and gentle cleaning detergent, scrub the spot until the stain is gone. Rinse with water and use a fresh paper towel to blot the area one last time. Let shoe dry completely before wearing again.
Once the shoe is completely dry, apply a protectant like leather conditioner or waterproof spray to the shoe. This will help keep the stain from returning and will also help to ensure that the material will not become damaged by future spills.
Mascara stains can be difficult to remove from shoes, but with patience and the right cleaning tools, it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By following the 5 steps outlined here, you can quickly and effectively remove mascara stains from your favorite pair of shoes.
