Mascara stains happen to best of us. Whether you’re dealing with a fresh stain or something that’s been around for a while, the good news is there are ways to get mascara out of clothes—no matter what fabric it’s on.

To remove a mascara stain from shirts, start by soaking the stained area in cold water for up to 30 minutes. Next, wet a clean towel with detergent, and dab at the stain lightly, working the suds into the fibers. Rinse the stained area with cold water and let it air dry. When the fabric is completely dry, check to see if the stain is gone. If it's still there, try one of the other methods listed below.
Soaking a mascara stain with rubbing alcohol can help break down the makeup particles and make the stain easier to remove. To try this method, soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and dab the stain with it. Once the stain is saturated, rinse the area with cold water. The alcohol will work to break down the makeup and help it come out of the fabric. If the stain persists, try dabbing it with detergent and cold water, then rinse again.
Using vinegar and baking soda is another way to get do removing stubborn mascara stains. Start by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water, then applying mixture generously to the stain. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then blot the area with a clean cloth. Rinse the spot again with water, then sprinkle a bit of baking soda on top. Gently rub the baking soda into the fabric to aid in breaking down stain. Once the stain has been lifted, wash the item in cool water and let it air dry.
Mascara stains on clothes don’t have to be permanent. With a few simple ingredients and some patience, you can remove even the toughest mascara stains from your favorite garments. Try one of the methods above to get back to wearing your favorite shirt in no time.
