The first step in removing mascara stains is to pretreat the stained area with a mild soap solution. Mix a tablespoon of liquid dish soap with a cup of warm water in a bowl or sink, and submerge the affected area of the mesh in the solution. Allow it to soak for up to an hour before gently rubbing the stained area with a soft cloth.
If the pretreatment with soap and water fails to remove mascara stain, next course of action is to handwash the garment in a mild detergent solution. Fill a sink or bucket with cool water, and add a few drops of mild laundry detergent. Submerge the garment in the solution, and use your hands to massage the stained area for several minutes. Allow the garment to soak for one hour before rinsing it thoroughly with clean, running water.
If the handwashing method does not dislodge the mascara stain, the last resort is to machine wash the item on the gentle cycle with warm water and a mild detergent. Be sure to add a color-safe bleach or fabric-safe oxygenated cleaner to the washing solution. After washing, inspect the stained area to determine if any traces remain. If so, repeat the pretreatment process again.
