What You’ll Need

  • Dishwashing soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • White cloth
  • Q-tips
  • Hair dryer (optional)

How to Clean Mascara Stains from Marc Jacobs

  1. Act quickly! Rinse the stain in cold water right away. This will help to prevent the stain from setting.
  2. Apply a small amount of dishwashing soap directly onto the stain. Gently rub the area with a white cloth.
  3. Mix 1 part vinegar with 2 parts lukewarm water and pour it onto the stained fabric. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Wash fabric with laundry detergent according to the label instructions. Dry completely either in the sun or using a hair dryer.
  5. If there is still some stubborn mascara residue visible, mix baking soda with water until it forms a thick paste and spread it over stain. Let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
  6. For small areas such as on bags or clothing with delicate fabrics, soak a q-tip in the vinegar solution and dab it directly onto the stain. Follow the instructions in steps 4 and 5.

Tips For Preventing Future Mascara Stains

  • Be careful when applying mascara - use gentle strokes to avoid getting it on the skin or fabric.
  • Always check the labels of your garments and accessories to ensure the fabric can be safely washed and dried.
  • Be mindful when applying makeup near someone else’s clothing or furniture.
  • Have a makeup bag or towel specifically for catching any excess mascara, powder, and other makeup.
  • Remove all traces of mascara before going to bed, to ensure that it doesn't transfer onto sheets or pillowcases.
