Stubborn mascara stains on clothing can really ruin the aesthetic and make your clothing unwearable. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can follow to restore your clothing back to its former glory. Here's how to clean mascara stains from a jumper.

Method 1: Sponge the Stain with Cold Water and Detergent

Using a sponge and cold water, gently blot the stained area to remove as much of the mascara as possible. Do not rub the stain, as this could spread it further. Once saturated, use a bit of laundry detergent and continue to sponge the area. Rinse off the detergent with cold water.

Method 2: Use White Vinegar

Mix one part white vinegar and two parts cold water. Dip a toothbrush into the solution and gently brush over the stain. Continue to blot the area with a cloth until the stain has been removed. Rinse off the vinegar with cold water and launder as usual.

Method 3: Use a Cleaning Solution

If the stain is still visible after the above methods, use a specialised cleaning solution tailored for removing mascara stains. Be sure to follow the instructions on the package. Test the solution on a hidden part of garment before using to ensure the fabric won't be damaged.

Method 4: Treat with Alcohol or Dry Cleaning Solution

If none of the above methods work, try treating the stain with rubbing alcohol or dry cleaning solution. Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging, and test it on an inconspicuous part of the garment first. Finally, launder as normal with cold water.

Final Tips

To prevent mascara stains in the future, make sure to check for any smudges before putting on your clothes. Additionally, avoid contact with water as this can cause mascara to run or smudge. Lastly, always wash with cold water to protect the colour of fabric.
