The best way to clean mascara stains from delicate fabrics like evening gowns is to use a combination of gentle detergent and simple cleaning approaches. Follow the steps below to quickly and easily remove any trace of mascara.
Before you can start cleaning, you’ll need to identify fabric your evening gown is made of. Most evening gowns are made of one or a combination of materials such as silk, cotton, rayon, synthetic fibers, or polyester. Different materials require different methods of cleaning, so be sure to pick the right one for your gown.
Start by wetting the stained area with cool water to moisten the fabric. Afterwards, apply a mild detergent such as Woolite and gently rub into the stained area. Let the detergent sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing it out with cool water. Be careful not to scrub too hard so that you don’t damage the fabric. This will help to lift away the mascara.
Make a solution of half white vinegar and half water and pour it onto stained area. Blot area with a soft cloth and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing off. This should help to further lift out the mascara stain.
Once you’ve removed as much of the stain as possible, it’s time to wash the evening gown. Read the care labels of your gown carefully and follow the instructions as to what type of detergent and water temperature to use. To further prevent damage, it’s best to hand wash your gown or put it in a delicate cycle with a gentle detergent. Once washed, let it air-dry.
