Before jumping into cleaning techniques, properly prepare the fabric for cleaning. Start by turning the fabric inside out so any dirt or stains will be hidden beneath the sewn seams. Then place the garment in a sink or tub filled with cold water and mix a tablespoon of mild, chemical-free detergent (like a baby shampoo or wool cleaner). Let the fabric soak for about 10 minutes or until the stain begins to break up. Once done, gently lift it out of water and press gently with a towel to absorb excess moisture. Do not rub or wring the fabric, as this could damage the material.
After soaking, take a soft brush and scrub the stained areas with an equal mixture of vinegar, baking soda, and warm water. Work the mixture into the fabric in circular motions. Then rinse the area with cool water and allow the fabric to air dry. You can also repeat this process if necessary.
Once the stain has been spot cleaned, you can wash the fabric in the washing machine. Set the machine to the most gentle cycle possible and use the coldest water temperature available. When the wash cycle is complete, hang the fabric to dry, or you can tumble dry on a low setting. It’s best to avoid using a dryer as this can damage the fabric.
If you’ve followed steps above and stain remains, you may want to repeat process. Since crepe fabrics are usually made from natural fibers, it’s best to avoid harsh chemicals that could irritate the fabric or fade the dye. If the stain still won't come out, try a professional dry cleaner.
