Before applying any cleaning products, you should always scrape off the excess mascara from the affected area. This will help the cleaning process be more effective, as well as prevent the stain from spreading further.
After scraping off excess product, the next step is to pretreat the stained area with a stain remover. This will help break down the mascara residue and make it easier to remove. You can use either a commercial stain remover or make an effective homemade solution with white vinegar and liquid detergent.
Once stain has been pretreated, you can proceed to washing item with hot water and laundry detergent. Use the hottest temperature setting fabric can handle and an oxygen-based bleach (if fabric can tolerate it) for best results. After washing, check to see if the stain is completely gone before drying the garment.
If the stain is still there after washing, repeat the previous steps as necessary until the stain is completely gone.
