Chantilly lace has been around since the 1700s and was created in Chantilly, France, from which it takes its name. The fabric is complex and made up of many intricate loops and circles with no two garments exactly alike. This makes it an ideal choice for heirloom-quality clothing for special occasions. Unfortunately, accidents do happen and mascara can sometimes end up smeared on the fabric.

Step 1: Apply a Stain Remover

Start by applying a pre-wash stain remover to the affected area. This will help break down the oily residue left behind by the mascara. Allow the stain remover to sit for at least 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.

Step 2: Treat with a Laundry Detergent

Once the stain remover has been rinsed off, treat the stained area with a mild liquid laundry detergent. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently work the detergent into the fabric in a circular motion. Be careful not to scrub too hard as the fabric can be easily damaged. Once the detergent has had a chance to work its way into the fibers, rinse once more with cold water.

Step 3: Use a Specialized Cleaner

For tougher stains, use a specialized cleaner such as OMO Professional Stain Remover or Vanish Pre-Wash Stain Remover. Apply the cleaner to the stained area, work it into the fabric using a soft-bristled brush, and then wait at least 15 minutes before rinsing off in cold water and air drying.

Step 4: Gently Iron

If the stain persists after following the steps above, try ironing the fabric. Set your iron to the lowest setting and press the fabric gently from the back side. Do not directly press the stained area as this may cause further damage. Hold the iron in place for a few seconds at a time and repeat until stain has been removed.

Conclusion

With a little patience and the right supplies, it is possible to remove mascara stains from delicate Chantilly lace without damaging the fabric. Follow these steps to keep your favorite garment looking like new.
