berry One of the worst and most common staining dilemmas is how to remove marker stains from clothes. Markers, especially permanent markers, can be a real menace when it comes to ridding them from fabrics, leaving us feeling helpless and defeated. Whether it’s the result of kids becoming creative with the furniture or art supplies at home, or you’re the one who had a hand in mess at work, it is possible to restore your workwear to its original state. The first step is to assess the garment for the type of fabric and any special care instructions. Depending on the material, there are different solutions available. Let’s look at some of most common fabric types and the best methods of cleaning up that stubborn marker stain:

Cotton and Cotton Blends

These fabrics can usually be treated with a combination of dishwashing detergent and rubbing alcohol. Mix both ingredients in a bowl and soak a cotton ball in the mixture. Next, gently dab stain and rinse with cold water. For tougher stains, repeat the process until the stain is gone.

Wool and Silk

Dry cleaning solvents are the best way to remove marker stains from these materials. Only use this method if the garment label says “dry clean only” as using a solvent on fabrics not meant to be dry cleaned can cause damage. Before you try this method, make sure to test solvent in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it won’t damage the fabric.

Polyester and Polyester Blends

Use hairspray on stained area and let it sit for several minutes before washing in hot water. If the stain is still visible after washing, repeat the process until it is gone. No matter which cleaning method you choose, always start by pre-treating stained area with a stain remover before washing. This will help lift stain so it’s easier to remove. Removing marker stains from workwear doesn’t have to be a difficult task. With just a few simple steps, you can quickly restore your clothing to its original, stain-free state.
