Step 1: Scrape off any excess marker from wallpaper.

Using a butter knife or the edge of an old credit card, gently scrape away any large chunks of marker that may still remain on the wallpaper. Be careful not to press down too hard and tear the wallpaper.

Step 2: Pre-treat the area with a stain fighting solution.

Mix 1/4 cup of dish soap with one quart of warm water. Using a soft cloth, dab the solution onto the stained area. This will help to lift the marker stain out of wallpaper.

Step 3: Wipe away the stain fighting solution with a damp cloth.

Using a clean damp cloth, gently wipe away the solution. Be sure to rinse the cloth frequently as you wipe so you don't spread the stain.

Step 4: Apply a stain remover and scrub.

After wiping away the solution, apply a specialist stain remover to the affected area. Follow the instructions on the stain remover bottle and use a scrubbing brush to lightly scrub the area. Once the stain has been removed, rinse the area with warm water.

Step 5: Remove any residual odor.

Finally, to eliminate any residual odor caused by the mark, use an odor neutralizing spray on the area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and then wipe away with a clean damp cloth.

How do I prevent marker stains on my wallpaper?

The best way to prevent marker stains is to remind your kids to only use markers on paper. You can also cover the walls with protective plastic to avoid any staining.

Can I use bleach to remove marker stains?

No, bleach can damage wallpaper so it is not recommended. Stick to using a mild dish soap solution or a specialist stain remover.
