What You Need

  • Paper towels
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Sponge (optional)
  • Toothbrush (optional)

Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step in removing a marker stain is to get rid of any excess marker. Take some paper towels and blot the area until most of the marker is gone.

Step 2: Apply Dishwashing Liquid

Once you’ve blotted the marker, apply a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the area. Rub the solution into the fabric using your fingers or a sponge.

Step 3: Rinse the Area

Rinse the area with water and then blot it with a paper towel or cloth to remove the dishwashing liquid.

Step 4: Apply White Vinegar

Mix white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and apply to the stained area. Use a toothbrush to work the solution into the fabric, then rinse with water and blot with a paper towel or cloth.

Step 5: Apply Baking Soda

If the stain remains, mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste. Rub the paste into the fabric and let sit for 15-30 minutes. Then, rinse with water and blot with a paper towel or cloth.

Step 6: Launder as Usual

Once the stain is gone, launder your garment as usual. Make sure to use appropriate cycle and settings for your type of fabric.

Final Tips

  • Make sure to test all products on a hidden part of the garment before using.
  • Don’t rub the fabric too hard, as this could cause fibers to break down.
  • If stain doesn’t come out, try a commercial stain remover.
