Removing Permanent Marker Stains

To get rid of permanent marker stains, you'll need:

  • A dry cleaning solvent
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Paper towels
  • An old toothbrush
  • White vinegar

The first step is to take a paper towel and apply a generous amount of dry cleaning solvent onto it. Place the paper towel over the marker stain and press down firmly. Blot the stain gently until paper towel soaks up most of the solvent.

Next, mix equal parts of dishwashing liquid and white vinegar in a bowl. Use an old toothbrush to work the solution thoroughly into the stain. Then, allow the solution to sit for at least 5 minutes.

Once the solution has been on the stain for at least five minutes, take a clean cloth and blot the excess liquid from area. Rinse the area with water and pat it dry with another clean cloth. Repeat this process if the stain remains.

Removing Washable Marker Stains

For washable markers, the process is slightly different. Start by applying a small amount of dishwashing liquid over the stain. Allow the soap to sit for at least 5 minutes before taking a paper towel and blotting away the excess liquid.

Once the area has been dried, take a damp cloth and start working the area. Be gentle as you don’t want to spread the stain. Once you’ve finished scrubbing, rinse the area with cold water and pat dry with a clean cloth.

Conclusion

Marker stains can be pesky but they don’t have to ruin your favorite tops. With right materials and process, you can quickly and safely remove both permanent and washable marker stains.
