If your camping gear is made from fabric, such as a canvas tent or a sleeping bag, you should start by spotting stain with a cloth soaked in lukewarm water. As well as cleaning up the immediate area, this will help to stop the marker from spreading while you work on it.
Before you apply any cleaners, check fabric tag on your camping gear to make sure you're using the right product. Different materials may require different approaches, so it's important to confirm that you're using the right solution.
Rubbing alcohol or a commercial cleaner designed for marker removal are both effective solutions. Apply either of these directly onto the affected area and allow it to sit for several minutes before rubbing gently with a cloth to remove the stain. Repeat if necessary, then rinse the fabric with lukewarm water and allow it to dry.
Camping gear made from synthetic materials or leather requires a slightly different approach. Start by spotting the stain with a cloth soaked in lukewarm water and let the material dry completely. You can then use a specialized cleaner to remove the stain - again, make sure you read the fabric tag to confirm that you're using the right solution.
For synthetics and leather, a specialist cleaning foam or leather cleaner is usually the best bet. Apply a small amount of the product to the stain, leave it to work for a few minutes, then finish off by wiping with a damp cloth. Again, repeat this process as many times as necessary until stain has disappeared.
