Materials Needed

  • Cleaning solvent
  • Towel or rag
  • Dish soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • Cotton swabs

Removing Dried Marker Stains

  1. Using a towel or rag, lightly wet the stained spot with a cleaning solvent, such as rubbing alcohol, mineral spirits or turpentine.
  2. Be sure to do a patch test first in an inconspicuous area to check that the solvent won’t damage or discolor the fabric.
  3. Allow the solvent to sit on the stain for a few minutes.
  4. Gently work the solvent into the fabric with a cloth or towel.
  5. If marker stain is still present, repeat steps 2-4 until it’s removed.
  6. Rinse the fabric with warm water to remove the solvent, then launder using the hottest water setting the fabric will allow.

Removing Wet Marker Stains

  1. Mix one tablespoon of dish soap and one tablespoon of laundry detergent in a bowl of warm water.
  2. Dab the stained area with a cloth or towel to transfer as much of the marker to the cloth as possible.
  3. Using a cotton swab, gently rub the stained area with the soapy water.
  4. Continue rubbing with a clean cloth soaked in soapy water, alternating between two until the marker has been removed.
  5. Rinse the fabric with warm water, then launder as usual.
