Trying to get marker off a scarf can be a tricky task. Most of us reach for a cleaning product and erase damage, but this may not be the most effective way to remove marker stains without damaging the delicate fabric. Here are 3 easy steps to remove marker stains from your scarf without ruining the fabric.

Step 1: Blot the stain

Before you attempt to remove stain, grab a white cloth or paper towel and gently dab the stained area. This will help absorb some of the liquid and reduce the amount of spreading. Make sure to use a light pressure, so as not to drive the stain further into the fabric.

Step 2: Find an appropriate cleaner

Once you’ve blotted the stain, it’s time to find an appropriate cleaner. Many household items such as vinegar, rubbing alcohol, lemon juice, and even toothpaste can work wonders on marker stains. If you’re looking for a more natural option, try combining equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and lightly mist it over the stain. Be sure to test any cleaner on a small portion of the fabric first.

Step 3: Rinse and dry

After applying the cleaner of your choice and giving it a few minutes to work its magic, rinse away any excess with cold water. Place the scarf on an absorbent surface and let it air-dry. If you need to expedite the drying process, use a blow-dryer set on the lowest, coolest setting. Once it’s done, check to see if there are any remaining traces of the stain. If so, repeat the cleaning process until you’re satisfied with the results.
