Prepping the Stain

When tackling a marker stain on a raincoat, it's important to start with prepping stain. Using a spoon, gently scrape off any flakes of dried marker. Apply a few drops of detergent directly to the stain and gently scrub it in with your fingers. Rinse the area with water to remove any excess detergent.

Using a Stain Remover

Once you have prepped the stain, it's time to tackle it with a stain remover. There are several types of stain removers available, including liquid, gel and powder. Start by reading manufacturer's instructions to determine how best to use the product. Then, depending on the type of stain remover, either rub or spray it on the stained area. Let the stain remover sit for the recommended amount of time before blotting up with a clean cloth. Next, rinse the area with water and allow it to air dry.

Using Mild Chlorine Bleach

For particularly stubborn marks, you may need to try using a mild chlorine bleach such as diluted Clorox. Keep in mind, however, that this method should only be used on whites or color-safe fabrics - never on colors! Start by mixing 1/4 cup of Clorox with 1 gallon of cold water. Soak the stained area of raincoat in the solution for 15 minutes. Then, remove the raincoat from solution and rinse it with clear, cold water. Hang the coat to dry in a well-ventilated room.

Using Rubbing Alcohol

For smaller, less stubborn stains, you can also try using rubbing alcohol. Pour a few drops of rubbing alcohol directly onto a cotton pad or cloth and gently dab at the stained area. Again, be sure to check the fabric label first to make sure the fabric is colorfast. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with water to remove any excess rubbing alcohol and hang the coat to dry.
