There are a few methods to try when cleaning marker off of pumps. Before beginning any of these methods, start by scrubbing any excess dry marker off surface of the shoe with a cloth. Then, depending on the material of your shoe, choose one of the following methods to remove the stain:

  • For leather or suede pumps: Dampen a cloth with a mixture of one tablespoon of dishwashing detergent and two cups of warm water. Make sure to wring out any excess liquid from the cloth before scrubbing the stain in circular motions. Rinse the cloth and wipe away any soap residue. Let the shoes air dry.
  • For canvas pumps: Mix a half cup of baking soda and one tablespoon of white vinegar together in a small bowl until it forms a paste. Using a clean cloth, gently rub the paste into stain. You may need to add a little bit of water if the paste is too thick. Wipe away any residue with a damp cloth and air dry.
  • For nubuck or rubber pumps: If pump is made of nubuck or rubber, use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) with a solution of one teaspoon of mild detergent and one cup of warm water. Scrub away at the stain in a circular motion, then rinse with a damp cloth. Air dry.

If the marker stain still remains, try applying rubbing alcohol directly to the stain and let it sit for several minutes. Wipe away with a damp cloth and air dry. If this does not work, try using an acetone-based nail polish remover, but make sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first.
