What is Poplin?
Poplin is a type of fabric made from cotton, polyester or a combination of both. It is often used in dress shirts, women's blouses, skirts and even flags. It is known for its durability, resistance to wrinkling and general versatility in terms of cleaning.
Gathering Supplies
Before attempting to remove any stain, it is always important to have the right supplies on hand. To try and clean marker stains from poplin, you will need:
- Water
- Dish soap
- Oxygen bleach
- Soft cloth/sponge/scrub brush
- White vinegar
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Blot the stained area with a soft cloth or sponge to absorb as much of the marker as possible. Do not scrub the stain, otherwise you may risk spreading it further.
- Mix together one part water and one part dish soap in a bowl or other container. Soak the cloth or sponge in solution, then gently sponge the stained area, starting from the outside and working towards the inside.
- Rinse off the area and blot it dry with a clean cloth.
- If stain remains, mix together a solution of oxygen bleach and warm water according to product instructions. Apply this mixture to the stained area, then rinse and blot again.
- If the stain still remains, try soaking area in white vinegar for 30 minutes before rinsing and blotting with a clean cloth.
Tips and Tricks
- If you don't have oxygen bleach, you can try using white wine instead.
- If you are dealing with a dry-clean-only garment, do not attempt to remove the stain yourself. Take it to a professional cleaner.
