Step 1: Identify the Fabric

The first step in removing marker stains is to identify the fabric of your curtains and draperies, as this will determine which cleaning methods you can use. If fabric is delicate, such as silk or velvet, then it’s best to take them to a professional cleaner who can handle more delicate fabrics.

Step 2: Prepare Area

Once you’ve identified the fabric of your curtains and draperies, it’s time to prepare the area. Start by laying out a large drop cloth or towel to protect the floor and other surfaces. Then remove any dust, dirt, or lint from the fabric with a soft-bristled brush.

Step 3: Apply Cleaning Solutions

Depending on the type of fabric, there are several cleaning solutions you can use. For washable fabrics, mix one part dishwashing liquid with one part cold water and blot the stain gently with a clean cloth. For dry-clean-only fabrics, apply a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent to a clean cloth and blot the stain gently. Be sure to use only a small amount of solvent, as too much could damage the fabric.

Step 4: Rinse the Area

Once you’ve applied the cleaning solution, rinse the area with a damp cloth and warm water. This will help to remove any remaining traces of marker stain. Then pat the area dry with a clean cloth.

Step 5: Dry Area

Finally, hang curtains or draperies back up and allow them to air dry completely. Once they are completely dry, they should look as good as new!
