The first step in removing marker from your down jacket is to choose an appropriate cleaner. You want one that won't damage the fabric, so look for something mild and non-abrasive. A liquid laundry detergent or dish soap are both good choices as they're designed to be gentle on fabrics. If you don't have either of those handy, you could also try a homemade solution of white vinegar, baking soda, and water.
Once you have your cleaner selected, it’s time to pre-treat the stain. This can help lift the marker and make it easier to remove it. Start by wetting a cloth with cleaner, then dab the stain gently. Don’t rub – this will just spread stain further. If the stain is particularly stubborn, you could also let the cleaner sit on spot for a few minutes before blotting.
When you’ve finished pre-treating the stain, it’s time to wash jacket. Do this on a gentle cycle with warm water and the same cleaner you used for pre-treating. Once the cycle is complete, check the stain to make sure it’s gone. If not, repeat steps two and three until stain is removed. When you’re finished, rinse the jacket with cold water one last time.
