No matter how careful you are with your clothes, accidents happen. It could be a squirt of ketchup or the innocent swipe of a permanent marker — and the consequences can be devastating. When it comes to cotton seersucker, challenge to return it to its original look can seem overwhelming. But don't panic! With a few simple steps, you can get that fabric looking good as new.

Step 1: Saturate the Stain

Start by saturating the stained area with rubbing alcohol or vinegar. Make sure you liberally soak the stain before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Use Soap and Water

Using a mild detergent, mix the soap with lukewarm water. Gently dip a sponge or cloth in soapy solution and gently dab the stained area until the mark starts to fade. If the stain persists, move onto the next step.

Step 3: Apply Baking Soda Paste

Mix together baking soda and water to form a paste. Spread the paste over the stained area and let it sit for 30 minutes. This will give the baking soda enough time to work its magic and break down the marker.

Step 4: Rinse and Repeat

After the baking soda has had a chance to work, rinse the area with cold water. Take a damp cloth and blot the area until all baking soda is gone. If the stain still persists, repeat steps 1-3.

The Final Step

Once stain is completely gone, launder the garment according to care instructions. Air dry the item or, if possible, hang it on a clothing rack so the air can circulate freely.
