When dealing with marker stains on cotton poplin, it’s important to act quickly. As soon as the stain is discovered, you should test an inconspicuous area of fabric with a mild detergent or upholstery cleaner. This will help ensure that the cleaning method won’t discolor or damage the fabric.
Once you’ve determined that the chosen cleaning product and method is safe for fabric, you can begin removing the stain. Start by gently blotting the area with a damp cloth and then lightly scrubbing with a soft bristle brush. If the fabric is delicate, you should avoid vigorous scrubbing.
If your initial scrubbing doesn’t remove stain, you can try pre-treating the fabric with a solution made of 1 tablespoon of dish detergent and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar mixed in two cups of warm water. Allow this solution to sit on the stained area for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water. You can then follow up by scrubbing with a soft brush.
If the marker stain persists, it may be time to turn to a laundry pre-treatment stain remover. These products are designed to target tough, set-in stains like marker. Make sure to follow the directions on the product carefully and to test an inconspicuous area of the fabric before applying the cleaner to the entire stain.
Once the marker stain has been removed, put the cotton item in the washing machine as normal. Before drying, inspect the area to make sure all of the marker is gone. If any marker remains, repeat the above steps until the stain is fully removed.
