What You Will Need:

  • Soft white cloth
  • Mild detergent
  • Stain remover
  • Non-acetone nail polish remover
  • Iron
  • Hair dryer

Step One: Blotting

The first step to removing marker stains from Carrickmacross lace is blotting. Place a soft, white cloth on top of the stain and press down gently so that the cloth absorbs as much of the stain as possible. Do not scrub or rub the fabric, as this could damage delicate lace.

Step Two: Detergents and Stain Remover

Once you have blotted as much of the stain away as possible, mix a small amount of mild detergent with warm water and use a clean cloth to apply the solution to the stained area. Blot the solution until the stain is no longer visible. If the stain persists, you can use a specialized stain remover, such as Spray ‘n Wash, on the affected area. Be sure to read the instructions on the product and test it in an inconspicuous spot before applying it to the lace.

Step Three: Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover

If neither detergent solution nor the stain remover work, there is one last resort: non-acetone nail polish remover. Apply a small amount of the remover to a cloth and dab gently at the stained area. Do not rub the fabric. The non-acetone nail polish remover should be effective in removing even the most stubborn marker stains.

Step Four: Ironing and Hair Drying

Once you have removed the marker stain, it’s important to set the dye in the lace by ironing or hair drying. Place the lace between two layers of paper or fabric and set the iron to low heat. Gently iron the fabric until it is dry and dye has set. Alternatively, you can use a hair dryer set on low heat, holding it approximately six inches away from the fabric.

Conclusion

Accidents happen, but marker stains don’t have to ruin your Carrickmacross lace. With a bit of patience and the right supplies, it is possible to remove even most stubborn marker stains without damaging the delicate fabric.
