When it comes to marker stains, time is of essence. Immediately remove any excess marker with a butter knife or spoon, as scraping can cause further damages to your calico garment. As soon as you’ve cleared away the excess, it’s time to get to work on the stain itself.
The most successful method for removing a marker stain from calico is to submerge the fabric in a bowl full of cold water and rinse the area with a mild detergent. Use a sponge or a brush to lightly scrub the affected area, but be careful – too much rubbing could ruin the fabric.
Another technique is to blot the mark with a cloth soaked in white vinegar. Once the cloth becomes saturated, you can use another cloth soaked in plain water to rinse off the white vinegar. Repeat this process until the stain lightens, then rinse the area with cold water one last time.
After successfully removing the stain, next step is to dry the fabric. To avoid setting in the stain, avoid using a direct heat source such as an iron, mixed cycle in a washing machine, or tumble dryer. Instead, lay the garment out flat on a towel and let it air dry.
The best way to rid yourself of marker stains is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Carefully read the product label before using any markers and always apply a barrier between your calico fabric and the marker you wish to use.
