Permanent marker stains on clothing can occur in a number of ways — a child doodling on their shirt, accidentally leaving an ink pen in a pocket, or even a misjudged swipe of a permanent marker on a collar or pocket. Whatever the cause, permanent marker stains can be difficult to remove. However, if you act quickly and use the right technique, you can get rid of a permanent marker stain on a blazer without much fuss.
What You'll Need
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% solution)
- A soft-bristled toothbrush or nail brush
- Laundry detergent
Removing Stain
- Remove excess marker by scraping it off with a butter knife.
- Soak a soft-bristled toothbrush or nail brush in isopropyl alcohol.
- Gently scrub the stained area with the brush.
- Rinse with cold water.
- Apply laundry detergent directly to the stain.
- Allow the detergent to sit for 10 minutes.
- Rinse the blazer in cold water.
- Repeat if necessary.
- Allow the blazer to air dry.
Tips & Tricks
- If stain persists, place a pile of paper towels over the stain and press an iron set to a low heat setting over the paper towels. This should lift the stain onto the paper towels.
- If possible, always test a small, unseen area before starting to apply any cleaning product.
- If the blazer has pockets, check them often. Ink pens and permanent markers can easily end up in pockets and leak out, creating a stain.
