Step 1: Pre-treating Stain

The best way to start tackling a lasting marker stain is to pre-treat the bandana with a cleaning solution. Try combining ¼ teaspoon of mild liquid laundry detergent with one quart of warm water and mix well. Submerge the stained area in the cleaning solution, and let it sit for at least an hour.

Step 2: Washing the Bandana

Pour out solution and pop the bandana into the washing machine on a gentle cycle with warm water. Use mild laundry detergent, as other detergents are too harsh and may cause colors to fade on the bandana.

Step 3: Preparing an All-Natural Stain Remover

If the marker has still resisted your efforts, mix together four tablespoons of baking soda and two tablespoons of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz and bubble as you stir it, so make sure you are using a bowl large enough to contain the reaction.

Step 4: Applying the Stain Remover

Use a paper towel or brush to dab the paste onto the affected areas. Leave the remedy to sit for 30 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water. Let bandana air dry.

Tips for Preventing Future Stains

  • Keep markers away from any fabric as much as possible.
  • Double check the care label before washing the fabric to make sure you use the correct temperature.
  • Use pre-wash solutions.
