Removing the Stain

Before cleaning your abaya, do a quick spot check. This will help you determine which type of marker and degree of saturation is present. If the marker ink is still wet, try to dab away as much of it as possible with a damp cloth or sponge. If the marker has already dried, scrape away the excess with a butter knife or spoon.

Next, pretreat mark with a professional prewash cleaner. If one is unavailable, you can make an effective at-home stain remover by combining 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water. Apply stain remover or solution directly to mark, and let it sit for 15 minutes before laundering.

Washing the Abaya

To wash your abaya, set your washing machine to the gentlest cycle available, and use cold water only. To avoid further staining, do not mix it with any other fabrics. Use the correct amount of laundry detergent, and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. This will help to reduce fading and preserve the fabric.

Once the washing cycle is complete, remove the abaya immediately and hang it up to dry – never put it in the dryer, as this can damage fabric. If the stain is still present, repeat the pretreatment and washing steps until the mark is removed.
