No one ever wants to find lipstick stains on their traditional clothing, but don't stress! Removing lipstick stains doesn't have to be a daunting chore. Taking a few simple steps and reaching for common household items will have your garments back to looking like new in no time.

Removing Lipstick Stains from Cotton or Cotton Blend Fabrics

  • Mix one part white vinegar with one part water and pour the solution onto the stained area.
  • Drop a bit of liquid dish detergent onto stain and scrub it in with an old toothbrush.
  • Rinse the entire garment in warm water and check to make sure the stain is gone.
  • If stain still isn't completely removed, repeat Steps 1-3.
  • Once the stain is gone, launder the garment according to its care labels.

Removing Lipstick Stains from Silk or Wool Fabrics

  • Dampen a sponge with cold water.
  • Rub a small amount of laundry detergent into the stained area.
  • Using the dampened sponge, gently blot the stained area and remove any excess laundry detergent.
  • Mix two parts hand dishwashing liquid with one part cold water and pour onto the stained area.
  • Rinse the garment with cold water and repeat Steps 2 through 4 as necessary until the stain is removed.
  • Once the stain is gone, carefully launder garment according to its care labels.

Additional Tips

  • When attempting to remove any type of stain, always take care to rub in the direction of the fabric weave.
  • Always test an inconspicuous area of fabric before applying any stain remover.
  • If stain remains after following the steps above, try treating the stain with hairspray or rubbing alcohol, or take the garment to a dry cleaner for professional cleaning.
