Step 1: Identify the Fabric

Before you start trying to get a lipstick stain out of your tie, it's important to identify the fabric it is made out of. Depending on the fabric, you'll need to use different techniques for cleaning. Most ties are made from silk, polyester, rayon, or a blend of fabrics. Each type of fabric will require a different approach.

Step 2: Blotting and Absorbing

Once you've identified the fabric, the first step is to blot the stained area with a clean cloth. By blotting stain, you are absorbing as much of the oil-based lipstick as possible. You can also use a paper towel to absorb the excess liquid if needed.

Step 3: Choose the Cleaning Method

Now that you've absorbed as much of the oil-based lipstick as possible, you need to choose the right cleaning method for the fabric. For polyester or rayon ties, you can simply use soap and water. However, for silk ties, you may need to use specialty cleaners or take it to the dry cleaner.

Step 4: Gentle Washing

Once you've chosen the cleaning method, it's time to gently wash the tie. Follow instructions carefully and never rub or scrub the stain to avoid damaging the fabric. Gently dab stained area with a cleaning solution and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing the area with cold water.

Step 5: Air Dry and Iron

Once the tie has been washed, it's important to let it air dry rather than putting it in the dryer. After the tie is completely dry, you can iron it on a low setting to make sure there are no wrinkles. This will help the tie look fresh and new again.

Extra Tip: Pre-Treat the Stain

If you know your tie might come into contact with lipstick, it's a good idea to pre-treat it. Simply spray the tie with a pre-treatment solution before wearing it. This will protect fabric and make it easier to remove any lipstick stains.
