What You’ll Need

  • White distilled vinegar
  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Soft cloth or rag

Step 1: Blot Stain

Gently blot the stain with a soft cloth or rag to soak up as much of lipstick as possible. Do not rub fabric, as this could damage or spread the stain.

Step 2: Create a Cleaning Solution

Mix together equal parts of white distilled vinegar and water in a bowl. If the stain is very stubborn you may want to add a bit of baking soda to solution as well.

Step 3: Apply the Solution

Using a soft cloth or rag, dip it into the cleaning solution. Gently dab the solution onto the stain, allowing it to sit for a few minutes.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

Rinse the tartan with cold water, then pat it dry with a towel. Check that the stain has been completely removed before putting the tartan back into use.

Tips for Removing Lipstick Stains

  • Apply cleaning solutions as gently as possible, as too much rubbing may cause the stain to spread.
  • Avoid using hot water, as this can set the stain.
  • Check care instructions on your tartan before using any cleaning products or techniques.
